Eugeria's Take

Our team loved testing the Tovertafel, it's a fascinating console and has stimulated the interest of everyone at Eugeria. We brought it to several residents and were amazed at how easily they adopted the games on the Tovertafel. Witnessing the direct effects of the games on people with cognitive disabilities during our demonstrations has brought us great emotion and moments of sharing with the residents.

We encourage all departments and families to use the tover.

Nakile is a relatively small long-term care facility with 48 residents built in 1989 in a rural fishing community located in Nova Scotia. As the diagnosis of Dementia is progressively increasing in Canada there has also been a notably shift in our population at Nakile over the years. As over 85% of our population at Nakile has some from of Dementia we have been slowly revamping how our Therapeutic Recreation Team provides meaningful age-stage opportunities to those living at Nakile, while taking into consideration our barriers including our physical environment - we have very limited space. My co-worker was looking for a new programming idea and stumbled across “The Tover”. We instantly loved the concept as it is researched based with continuing updated content, adult themes, space saving design and user-friendly layout that encouraged not only our department to use the tover as part of our goal related programs but encouraging our families and other staff to use the system with our residents. Like most recreation departments we were concerned about price as we work with a very limited budget but presented the idea to our board regardless. Our amazing board members jumped in and canvased our local community businesses, and they gave generously and before we knew it, we were Tovering! We encourage all departments and families to use the tover. We are often moving the projection box from it’s two locations. Having the tover out in a common room is perfect for impromptu family interactions or evening sessions with our Dementia Support staff but we love having the ability to control the environment in our closed off multipurpose room. This allows us to transform it into a sensory room or use the tover to work one on one or in small groups without distractions. Like with all new equipment there were a few hiccups along the way however the staff at Eugeria is always eager to assist and is quick to respond. We definitely don’t regret our purchase and look forward to using the device for years to come. We can’t wait to see what other games will be added next!

At the moment everything is going well with the machine, I use it on the floors and in the big room. I also use it for themes such as Halloween and storytelling. It is wonderful.

We have been using the Tovertafel for 9 months, and find it to be an excellent tool for entertainment, socialization and stimulation for our residents with mild to late-stage dementia. Families are impressed and sometimes surprised by the interaction that is possible with their loved one who may have lost abilities. We have found that by playing appropriate games on the Tovertafel, some residents can regain memories, words, and most importantly, a smile. Our vision for the future is to encourage visitors and staff to get involved with the Tovertafel.

The Tovertafel has been an amazing care tool for our residents! Residents can benefit in all functional domains while using this device. We have noticed an increase in socialization when residents are engaged in playing a game together. For some of our residents, English is not their first language, and using the Tovertafel with them and other residents has helped to enhance communication and find some common ground. The Tovertafel has sparked conversations between the staff, residents, and with families. The fact that the Tovertafel has different levels also ensures that we are matching the abilities of our residents with the most suitable games. The Tovertafel is a multi-sensory and enjoyable tool that we will continue to use for years to come! I can’t wait to see what other games and options are released onto the Tovertafel in the future!

We have a new resident whose primary language is Spanish and speaks limited English. One of my Rec Aides also speaks Spanish and she took her to the Tovertafel this morning to play a few of the games. The resident told her that she has felt very depressed since being here, but playing the games was the first time she felt happy. They played together for almost an hour! I was so happy to hear my Rec Aide tell me that story
